Capabilities

What the UG65 does

8 LoRaWAN channels

SX1302 concentrator, half or full duplex, Class A/B/C devices on a single gateway.

Backhaul redundancy

Gigabit Ethernet plus Wi-Fi and an optional 4G LTE SIM slot for failover uplink.

PoE power

Single-cable install: 802.3af PoE feeds power and data over the RJ45 WAN port.

Packet forwarder

Semtech UDP and Basics Station forward raw frames to an external ChirpStack network server.

Node capacity

Handles around 2000 LoRaWAN end devices with up to 2 km urban coverage.

Data into your dashboard

Integration

Sensor / controller

Measures or controls in the field and sends LoRaWAN uplinks.

LoRaWAN gateway

Receives the radio packets and forwards them to the server.

ChirpStack

Network server: manages sessions and decodes the payload.

ThingsBoard / Grafana

Dashboards, alarms, rules and reports.

From the field

Configuration & pitfalls

Packet forwarder mode

For an external ChirpStack, switch the UG65 from its embedded network server to packet-forwarder mode (Semtech UDP or Basics Station) so it relays raw frames instead of terminating them locally.

Frequency plan match

The gateway channel plan and the ChirpStack region (for example EU868) must match exactly, or join requests are silently dropped.

Basics Station vs UDP

Basics Station runs over TLS and is the more robust choice across the public internet; Semtech UDP is simplest on a trusted LAN. Pick one consistently per gateway.

Gateway EUI & time

Register the gateway EUI in ChirpStack and keep NTP time in sync; Class B beacons and downlink timing depend on an accurate clock.

Your partner

How merkaio supports your UG65

From sourcing to day-to-day operation, all from one partner on our own European infrastructure.

Pre-staging & provisioning

We configure the UG65, set keys, intervals and alarms, and ship it ready to deploy.

Own decoder

Payload codec for ChirpStack v4 and ThingsBoard, implemented from the Milesight specification.

Dashboard integration

Data lands in your ThingsBoard or Grafana, with alarms and reports.

Operations & monitoring

We run the LoRaWAN stack and dashboards on European infrastructure, you just use the data.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The UG65 has a Semtech UDP packet forwarder and a Basics Station client, so it forwards raw LoRaWAN frames to an external ChirpStack network server. You do not have to use the embedded server.
No. The gateway only forwards radio frames. Decoding happens in the network server: you add the per-device codec (for example our EM or AM sensor decoders) to the ChirpStack device profile, not to the UG65.
It supports roughly 2000 LoRaWAN end devices, with up to about 2 km of coverage in urban areas and far more with line of sight, using its 8-channel SX1302 concentrator.
Backhaul is Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi or an optional 4G LTE SIM. Power is DC 9-24 V, 802.3af PoE over the RJ45 WAN port, or 5 V USB-C, with an operating range of -40 to +70 °C.
Use Basics Station when the gateway reaches ChirpStack over the internet, since it runs over TLS and reconnects cleanly. Use Semtech UDP only on a trusted local network. Configure one mode consistently per gateway.
Yes, it ships with an embedded network server for standalone use. For a central, multi-gateway ChirpStack deployment we instead run it in packet-forwarder mode and terminate the network server centrally.
