Capabilities

What the UG56 does

8-channel reception

SX1302 concentrator handles 8 uplink channels in parallel for 2000+ nodes.

Flexible backhaul

Ethernet with PoE, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or optional 4G LTE, with automatic failover between links.

PoE powered

Single 802.3af PoE cable carries power and data, or run it from 5 V / 2 A USB Type-C.

Forwarder to ChirpStack

Semtech UDP or Basics Station forwards raw frames to a self-hosted ChirpStack instance.

Gateway management

Gateway Fleet, Listen Before Talk and FUOTA for firmware updates over the air.

Data into your dashboard

Integration

Sensor / controller

Measures or controls in the field and sends LoRaWAN uplinks.

LoRaWAN gateway

Receives the radio packets and forwards them to the server.

ChirpStack

Network server: manages sessions and decodes the payload.

ThingsBoard / Grafana

Dashboards, alarms, rules and reports.

Configuration & pitfalls

Disable the embedded NS

The UG56 ships with a built-in network server. To use ChirpStack, disable the embedded NS and point the packet forwarder at your server, otherwise uplinks never leave the gateway.

Match the frequency plan

Set the same regional plan (for example EU868) on gateway and devices. A mismatch means joins and uplinks silently fail.

Open the UDP ports

Semtech UDP uses port 1700. Allow it through firewall and NAT toward your ChirpStack gateway bridge, or pick Basics Station over TLS for stricter networks.

Indoor IP30 rating

The UG56 is rated IP30, so it belongs in a cabinet or indoor riser. For outdoor masts choose an IP67 model such as the UG67.

Your partner

How merkaio supports your UG56

From sourcing to day-to-day operation, all from one partner on our own European infrastructure.

Pre-staging & provisioning

We configure the UG56, set keys, intervals and alarms, and ship it ready to deploy.

Own decoder

Payload codec for ChirpStack v4 and ThingsBoard, implemented from the Milesight specification.

Dashboard integration

Data lands in your ThingsBoard or Grafana, with alarms and reports.

Operations & monitoring

We run the LoRaWAN stack and dashboards on European infrastructure, you just use the data.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The UG56 runs a Semtech UDP packet forwarder and LoRa Basics Station, so it forwards to a self-hosted ChirpStack instance once you disable the embedded network server. No Milesight cloud is required.
No. A gateway only forwards LoRaWAN frames; decoding happens on the network server. You add the codec for each sensor (for example an EM300-TH) to its ChirpStack device profile, not to the gateway.
It uses a Semtech SX1302 with 8 channels and supports more than 2000 LoRaWAN nodes, depending on uplink interval, spreading factor and duty cycle in your region.
Ethernet with PoE, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and an optional 4G LTE modem with SIM slot. It supports multiple backhaul links with failover so the gateway stays connected if one path drops.
Either over 802.3af PoE on the RJ45 port, so one cable carries power and data, or from a 5 V / 2 A source over USB Type-C.
It is rated IP30 and meant for indoor or cabinet use. For outdoor masts and harsh environments choose an IP67 gateway such as the UG67.
