What the UG56 does
8-channel reception
SX1302 concentrator handles 8 uplink channels in parallel for 2000+ nodes.
Flexible backhaul
Ethernet with PoE, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or optional 4G LTE, with automatic failover between links.
PoE powered
Single 802.3af PoE cable carries power and data, or run it from 5 V / 2 A USB Type-C.
Forwarder to ChirpStack
Semtech UDP or Basics Station forwards raw frames to a self-hosted ChirpStack instance.
Gateway management
Gateway Fleet, Listen Before Talk and FUOTA for firmware updates over the air.
Integration
Sensor / controller
Measures or controls in the field and sends LoRaWAN uplinks.
LoRaWAN gateway
Receives the radio packets and forwards them to the server.
ChirpStack
Network server: manages sessions and decodes the payload.
ThingsBoard / Grafana
Dashboards, alarms, rules and reports.
Use cases
Self-hosted LoRaWAN
Forward to your own ChirpStack and keep device data in your infrastructure.
MoreSmart city coverage
Compact gateway for cabinets, poles and indoor risers across a district.
MorePorts and logistics sites
Compact gateway for berth, yard and warehouse sensors, backhauling occupancy and asset data to your own server.
MoreConfiguration & pitfalls
Disable the embedded NS
The UG56 ships with a built-in network server. To use ChirpStack, disable the embedded NS and point the packet forwarder at your server, otherwise uplinks never leave the gateway.
Match the frequency plan
Set the same regional plan (for example EU868) on gateway and devices. A mismatch means joins and uplinks silently fail.
Open the UDP ports
Semtech UDP uses port 1700. Allow it through firewall and NAT toward your ChirpStack gateway bridge, or pick Basics Station over TLS for stricter networks.
Indoor IP30 rating
The UG56 is rated IP30, so it belongs in a cabinet or indoor riser. For outdoor masts choose an IP67 model such as the UG67.
